Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Donald Trump and Beethoven
I have to admit, I thought of Trump during last night’s Beethoven concerto with the fantastic Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Joseph Swensen – but it made me try to play all that joy & beauty so ferociously. Beethoven knew and cared a lot about his social and political environment – it was hard for him not to, living through a revolution turned war, and his childhood steeped in the upward-looking ideals of Enlightenment. Yes, he wrote drama and despair and heartache – but he wrote so much joy and uplift. To combine the ‘beautiful with the good’ – that’s a lot to think about, and I sure did last night.
I hope Glasgow and Edinburgh enjoyed our performances. Last one tonight in Dumfries.
